Pioneer Trail Waterline Project

South Lake Tahoe, CA (August 4, 2026) – South Tahoe Public Utility District will begin construction on the Pioneer Trail Waterline Project in El Dorado County this August. Work is expected to continue through October along Pioneer Trail between Sierra House Elementary School and Susquehanna Drive.

The project will install nearly 9,000 feet of new 16-inch diameter water main to improve the reliability of the community's drinking water system and strengthen water delivery for firefighting.

"It's an important investment in South Lake Tahoe's future," said Trevor Coolidge, South Tahoe Public Utility District Project Manager. "This project completes a long-term vision of a looped water system between Meyers and Stateline for a resilient water system."

There is currently no watermain or fire hydrants along Pioneer Trail between Golden Bear Trail and Susquehana Drive. The new waterline will connect the existing water system, providing backup water supply if a pipeline is taken out of service for maintenance or an emergency. New fire hydrants will also be installed along Pioneer Trail south of Golden Bear Trail to improve fire protection in this high-risk wildfire area. The project will also install three new pressure-reducing valve stations to connect to multiple pressure zones.

During construction, drivers should expect one-lane traffic control and occasional delays on Pioneer Trail between Sierra House Elementary and Susquehana Drive. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained, and the District encourages motorists to allow extra travel time and use caution in work zones.

The $6 million project is funded in part through the Environmental Protection Agency's Community Grants Program, a USDA Forest Service grant through the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act, and a California Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan.
