South Lake Tahoe, CA (September 28, 2026) – As cooler temperatures and shorter days arrive, South Tahoe Public Utility District is reminding the community that fall is the perfect season to save water and prepare homes and irrigation systems for the winter ahead.

“Even though summer is behind us, water conservation remains important all year long,” said Lauren Benefield, Water Conservation Specialist. “Small changes in the fall can add up to big water savings, help prevent costly leaks, and protect your landscape through Tahoe’s winter conditions.”
Tips for Saving Water This Fall:

·         Adjust Irrigation Schedule – As temperatures cool, reduce watering to one to two days per week and continue adjusting as plants need less water.

·         Prepare Irrigation Systems for Winter – Inspect irrigation lines, valves, backflow devices, and outdoor faucets for leaks or damage before freezing temperatures arrive.

·         Check for Leaks – Fall is a great time to inspect outdoor faucets and irrigation system for leaks. Customers can log in to their WaterSmart account at stpud.watersmart.com for step-by-step leak-finding resources and videos.

·         Use Mulch – Add three to four inches of mulch around plants to help retain soil moisture, insulate roots, reduce weeds, and protect landscapes during colder weather.

·         Upgrade to a Smart Irrigation Controller – Purchase discounted smart irrigation controllers through the District’s current irrigation controller incentive program.

·         Rake, Don’t Hose: Use a broom or rake instead of water to clear leaves and debris from driveways, patios, and sidewalks.
